MUSIC AND ME

Hi you all!! I am Manuel Roncero Ros and I am taking this class, now you can't see me in class because I am in Spain with my family, next week I will be in class. A little bit of background about myself: I am from Spain, I am 20 and now you all can be wondering why I am here. Well, I always had a busy life, I was going to highschool, to the conservatory of music and I was playing tennis at my club. When I turned 16 I had to decide how I wanted my future to look like, that is why I decided to not close my doors, I came to the U.S. to follow the path I wanted to take and I am currently enrolled in a B.A. in music playing the Bassoon, a B.S. in Data Science concentrated in business, and a minor in math. I am also playing for the tennis team here at Converse, I encourage you all to come watch my matches, now is tennis season!

Related to music, I grew up hearing a lot of music because I started relatively young, at the age of 7. My father played the guitar and my sister the clarinet, that is probably why I started with music. I had my time periods where I wanted to quit music but I could never do it, and I am really proud of me and my parents for not making me quit, I love music. When I have free time I always put my headphones and listen to something, it is like I can't do anything without music.

Here is a picture of me when I was around 8, already playing the bassoon of course.

Now that I introduced myself, it is time to complete telling you about my music.

1. An example of something that I like right now:

As you know, I am from Spain so I like to move my hips, and the latin american songs go perfect if you try to move them. I like the music from Puerto Rico, Bad Bunny is an artist that I always liked and I still do it, I always listen right now to one of his songs called "Baile Inolvidable", if you listen to it it will force you to at least move something. Fun fact, Bad Bunny is going to be the artist for the superbowl this year :).

2. My Walk-Up Song:

Every athlete I think has thought about one walk-up song, and of course I have mine. I discussed this with my teammates and they still call me weird, I think they just don't like classical music. My walk-up song is................The New World Symphony, the 4th movement, it is very very heroic, it brings me a lot of motivation, I think I listen to it before every match.

3. An example of a music I don't really connect with:

I am very sorry, I don't want to hurt your feelings, but as a spanish person living in the U.S., it is hard for me to understand country music, I will have to put an example but I can tell you right now it is every country song, maaaaaaaybe I can understand the sad country songs, but I just don't like the country music. I remember my american friends freaked out when they played a country song hoping I was going to like it and I just did the opposite, I feel I disappointed them. I am going to put a song that is country but sad, I still don't understand it but I could a bit if I wanted to.

4. Bonus song:

Of course I have to say my favourite song, I said what song I play every day now but not my favourite song. When I was in the conservatory of music in Spain, I played the piano for two years (it was mandatory), and I really enjoyed the piano, it is such a beautiful instrument. Every time I am with friends I try to play piano songs, they always tell me they love it. I discovered this song in American Got Talent, I was around 12, Tokyo Myers performed it, he modified it a lot but I loved the begining of the song, then doing research I found it was a piece composed by debussy, and yes, I am talking about Clair de Lune, I never get bored of that song, a smile always appears in my face. Here is the modified Clair de Lune by Tokyo Myers, it is very different from the original, you will see.

And this is the original Clair de Lune performed by one of the best pianists right now, Lang Lang, I love how he performs it, also the video is really amazing, it really matches with the piece.

This was my last song, I hope you all enjoyed it, see you!!

  1. Hi Manuel. It's awesome that you directed your life how you did. I also can appreciate a fellow Music & STEM double major (Music & Chemistry), we've got our work cut out for us. Now your music choices are all VERY different, but I love to see some diversity. My favorite thing to listen to was your bonus piece, the adapted Clair de Lune. This adaption is very appealing. Thank you for sharing.

  2. Greetings Manuel, looking forward to seeing you next week, hope you’re enjoying ur trip in Spain with your family, it’s nice to know we both have families that were in music. Not many people have that in their family. I have some places I want to visit and Spain is definitely on my bucket list of places. I’ve had some questions about learning bassoon, maybe you can answer them for me and move my interest in learning. Love your song choices, have a lot of Latin songs and bad bunny makes about 20% of them. Gustavo is a great conductor to watch, I’ll say if I watch a video of him conduction a piece, I look for his expression and how he moves the ensemble. Thank you for sharing!

  3. Hey Manuel, it was intriguing to read about how you ended up here in the U.S. all the way from Spain and are pursuing such varied interests. I have a good friend who just studied abroad for a semester to Pamplona so I have been reading a bit about Spain and Spanish culture myself, its very cool to know people from the places I study. The Dvorak walk-up song is so relatable, I used to listen to it before some of my cross country meets, its definitely a motivator. Clair de Lune is one of those universally great pieces and seeing the modified version was also cool!

  4. Hello Manuel! I hope that you are doing well in Spain this week! I love how even during moments where you wanted to shut the door of being a musician, you kept it open and walked through it. That says something to me as I have had those moments of wanting to shut the door not knowing what wonderful opportunities await me. You should be proud of yourself. Very proud! I hope that your tennis matches are wonderful!

  5. Hey Manuel! It is so cool how you chose to come to America to pursue music and data science and a math minor. Also I love Claire de lune so much! Along with that, I would love to recommend a song to you. One of my favorite artists is Cody Fry and he actually did a mashup of Claire de Lune with one of his own songs. If you have any interest in that, it's called Photograph/Claire de Lune. I hope you are enjoying Spain!

  6. Hi Manuel. Although it is different for a walk-up song, your choice is a very good one, especially the beginning with the energy behind it. As someone who loves classic country, I understand it's not for everyone, but I've never enjoyed modern country music. I hope you have a safe ride back for next week.

  7. Hi Manuel!! Thank you for sharing more about your story and how you ended up in the US, it was super interesting to read! I actually think that the 4th movement of New World would be an amazing walk-up song and I love that you picked that as an athlete as well. Though I’ve lived in the US for my whole life, country music really isn’t my favorite either, so I definitely relate to you there. See you in class next week!

MUSIC AND FAMILY

Hi you all! Before getting into this post, I feel it's time for you to meet my family. This picture was taken 2 years ago, when we traveled to Germany. What makes this picture good is that there is a special guest, and that is KV! I', with my dad Carrlos, my mom Inma, my sister Lucía and my grandmother Conchi. I used my dad's help to get this post done(he likes to talk). Since there was a lot of information given by my dad, the way I am going to do this is classifying the questions into 4 series of questions that are related and grab all the answers and make them into one, that way you can follow easier. 1. How would you define music? As our beloved uncle José María says every time we see him and ask him questions about his prodigious memory (he is now 95 years old), music is the art of combining sounds and time, and I find that very clear and precise.  2. Have you been a musician? What instrument did you play? Do you still play it? What is a song you have dreamed of playin...

MUSIC AND MEMORY

Hi everybody! As you know if you read my last post, music had, has, and for sure will be always an important role in my life. I started studying music when I was 7 years old but of course I heard music earlier. I remember good memories with my dad in the car listening to the radio, I even remember some of the songs that the advertisements would use. I can even identify the cartoons I was watching ass a kid by their music. Only because of this that I talked about, for me music is such a powerful tool that can store information of your life. You know how computers have hard drives to store all the information in case you need it or you forget about something, music is the same, you can forget about things but when you hear a song that is relatedd to that thing, you remember immediately, so in a way a person can use music as his hard drive to store memories, and this is what my post is about. 1. To give context to my first choice, this was about 8 years ago. As some of you know, I pl...
